Contributions to nepalese studies CNAS, Tribhuvan University, 1981. - 18 p. Newari is one of four Tibeto-Burman languages with an old written tradition (the other three being Tibetan, Burmese and Manipuri) and the only member of the Himalayan group with such a tradition. The most common name for the language in linguistic literature is Nevari or Newari, but indigenous publications by Newari writers consistently refer to it as 'Nepal Bhasa'.l In colloquial term the language is simply known as Newa Bhae (the New! language) by the majority of native speakers.
